The studies collected in this volume were initially presented at various sessions of the Social Sciences and the Interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures Section of the Society of Biblical Literature. In both 2005 and 2006, this Section sponsored an invited session on the family in ancient Israel in conjunction with the American Schools of Oriental Research. The eighth study was presented at a 2007 session of the same SBL Section. Each piece has been updated and edited for publication.
