Abstract: This thesis describes Bible translation work carried out by SIL, a partner organization of Wycliffe Bible translators, in the West African country of Mali. Its aim is to offer propositions that will foster indigenous Bible translation. On the surface, some of the reasons for fostering indigenous Bible translation include diminishing numbers of expatriates coming from western countries and a decrease in western funding. Looking at a deeper level, however, the question that should be asked is what responsibility the Malian church has for translating the Bible into languages which do not yet have such a translation.
