Clarence Edward Noble Macartney, born in 1879 in Pennsylvania, was a notable figure in the Presbyterian Church and a conservative author. His father was a pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, which likely influenced his own path into ministry. Macartney's academic journey took him to the University of Denver, where he majored in English Literature from 1897 to 1901, followed by a year in Europe where he visited England, Scotland, and France. His theological studies began at Yale Divinity School but he soon transferred to Princeton Theological Seminary, graduating in 1905. He sought ordination in the Presbyterian Church USA and became a pastor in Paterson, New Jersey, revitalizing a struggling congregation from 1905 to 1914. In 1914, Macartney took a pastoral position at Arch Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, where he gained a reputation as a leading preacher. He embraced the emerging technology of radio to broadcast his sermons and also taught homiletics (the art of preaching) at Princeton Theological Seminary. A significant moment in his career was his public disagreement with Harry Emerson Fosdick in 1919 over Christian doctrines in the post-World War I context. This disagreement escalated in 1922 with Fosdick's sermon "Shall the Fundamentalists Win?" to which Macartney responded with "Shall Unbelief Win?", sparking the Fundamentalist–Modernist Controversy in the Presbyterian Church. He was a staunch defender of traditional Christian doctrines and played a key role in the church's affirmation of the "Five Fundamentals." Macartney moved to Pittsburgh in 1927, becoming the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. His congregation was large, and he was known for his energetic preaching schedule and for turning his sermons into books. He was actively involved in denominational politics, often advocating for a moderate approach. Despite his conservative views, he parted ways with J. Gresham Machen on certain issues, such as the creation of Westminster Theological Seminary and an independent missions board. He continued his ministry within the Presbyterian Church in the USA, serving as president of the League of Faith, promoting fidelity to scriptures and the Westminster Confession. His preaching career extended to college campuses, and he delivered several important lectures at theological seminaries. Macartney was also an amateur historian with a particular interest in the American Civil War. He passed away on February 19, 1957, at Geneva College. His legacy includes a vast number of books and sermons that reflect his deep commitment to evangelical preaching, often characterized by imaginative illustrations and insights into the human heart.
