Abstract: Baptists are a people who profess a living faith. This faith is rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ who is "the same yesterday, and today, and forever." Therefore, the sole authority for faith and practice among Baptists is Jesus Christ whose will is revealed in the Holy Scriptures. The Baptist Faith & Message has long been the standard for those who want to know more about the cherished and distinctive beliefs of Baptist Christians. This revised edition presents our basic beliefs about the Scriptures, God, man, salvation, grace, the church, the ordinances, the Lord's Day, the kingdom, Last Things, evangelism, missions, education, stewardship, cooperation, the social order, war and peace, and religious liberty. Includes learning activities and a teaching plan for a five-session group study. Herschel H. Hobbs (1907-1995) Herschel H. Hobbs was one of the most influential and shaping leaders in Southern Baptist life in the 20th century. His role as chairman of the 1963 “Baptist Faith and Message” committee, coupled with his tireless efforts to formulate and articulate Southern Baptist doctrine and distinctives for almost four decades have cemented his position in history. Hobbs, as preacher, author, denominational statesman and pastortheologian, has often been called “Mr. Southern Baptist.” Examining his early years it would have been nearly impossible for anyone to predict the influence he had on Baptist life. Hobbs stepped on the Southern Baptist stage under the guidance of and with the obvious blessings of God’s providential hand, for there was no family tradition of church leadership, denominational involvement, or serious biblical exposition or theological reflection on which he could build. Hobbs made a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ when he was 11 yrs old during a revival service. Hobbs developed a prolific writing ministry. In 1951 Hobbs published his first book followed by 150 different works for lay persons and pastors alike. Herschel Harold Hobbs (1907-1995) was a prominent Southern Baptist pastor, theologian, and author, widely recognized for his significant contributions to Baptist thought and life in the 20th century. Born in Alabama, Hobbs was a leading figure in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and played a pivotal role in shaping its doctrines and practices through his preaching, teaching, and written works. Hobbs's educational background included a Bachelor of Arts from Samford University (then Howard College) in Birmingham, Alabama, and a Bachelor of Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His deep commitment to theological education and pastoral ministry was evident throughout his career, which included serving as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Oklahoma City from 1949 to 1972. One of Hobbs's most significant contributions was his chairmanship of the committee that revised the Baptist Faith and Message in 1963. This document serves as a statement of faith for the Southern Baptist Convention, outlining the denomination's key beliefs and theological positions. Under Hobbs's leadership, the revision process aimed to address contemporary issues while maintaining fidelity to traditional Baptist doctrines. His ability to articulate complex theological concepts in accessible language made the Baptist Faith and Message a crucial document for guiding the faith and practice of Southern Baptists. Hobbs was also an accomplished author, writing extensively on biblical interpretation, Christian living, and the distinctives of Baptist theology. "The Baptist Faith and Message" is among his most well-known works, serving as a comprehensive guide to the beliefs of the Southern Baptist denomination. His writings continue to be influential in Baptist circles and beyond, reflecting his commitment to the authority of Scripture, the autonomy of the local church, and the priesthood of all believers. Throughout his life, Herschel H. Hobbs was a respected voice in Southern Baptist discussions, known for his eloquence, theological depth, and commitment to evangelism and missions. His legacy includes not only his contributions to Baptist theology and denominational identity but also his influence on countless individuals through his pastoral ministry and public speaking engagements.
