Subject: This monograph deals with the subject of best approximation in the sense of Chebyshev as applied to the problem of making univariate functional data available to the high-speed digital computing machine. Our investigation is of a numerical and empirical nature. Part I of this book serves as an introduction to the collection of approximations given in Part II. Part II contains the "Approximations for Digital Computers," formerly issued as a cumulative publication of loose sheets and made available to numerical analysts upon request. Each sheet of the seventy-odd issued in this series contains an approximation of a useful or illustrative nature presented with a carefully drawn error curve.
