<br/><br/> "While 'No Strangers in Exile' is a work of fiction, it is closely based on fact. The main group of characters consists of simple, devout German Mennonite colonists from the village of Mariental in the Alexandertal settlement in Samara Province. Alexandertal consisted of ten villages with a combined population of well over a thousand. Founded in 1861, it was the last of the four original Mennonite settlements founded in Russia after 1789. By World War I there were another forty daughter settlements dotting the Russian plains of Ukraine to Siberia. By that time the total Mennonite population in Russia had risen to about one hundred thousand. These German speaking Mennonites were highly successful farmers; they were also breaking into the world of business and the professions when they were stopped short by the Revolution"
