The first work was published anonymously in 1605 under title: The first part of Ieronimo. Authorship is attributed to Thomas Kyd by the editor, based on the "memorial" theory of corrupt quartos, with The first part of Ieronimo being a memorial version of a longer good text by Kyd which preceded The Spanish tragedy and combined with it to form a two-part play.
