Dissertation note: Thesis Columbia Biblical Seminary and School of Missions 2011. Abstract: Jerry Allen Rankin served the Southern Baptist Convention's International Mission Board (IMB) for seventeen years. He led the mission agency through a noteworthy paradigm shift in which the IMB grew to embrace local churches to address the Great Commission task together. Rankin led the IMB in the late 1990s into partnership with others to personalize missions for local Southern Baptist churches. Personalization Discovery Days, a 2002 internal study, revealed significant lessons demanding attention. Specifically, the IMB had failed to relate effectively to supporting churches. Further, churches had much to offer in the Great Commission task beyond sending and supporting missionaries. The IMB developed and provided training for IMB personnel to address the ethos and skills necessary to relate to partners effectively.
