Subject: This collection of essays examines the wisdom traditions of the Old Testament from a variety of angels. Consideration is given to significant general issues in the study of Israelite wisdom, namely issues of ethics, gender, and orality in these traditions, as well as the place and limits of 'wisdom' and the slipperiness of the concept of 'wisdom literature'. Investigations are made of the three 'wisdom books' of the Hebrew Bible, with specific attention to literacy and linguistic matters in the book of Proverbs and to that book's use of the phrase "the fear of the Lord", to the divine speeches in the book of Job and to the main character's response to those speeches, and to several issues in the book of Ecclesiastes (the rhetorical structure of the book, its surprising patristic interpretation, and the role of the royal fiction within the book). Enquires are also devoted to a range of texts in conversation with wisdom perspectives, namely the Psalms, the Song of Songs, the Pentateuch, Jeremiah, the story of David and Nabal, and the deuterocanonical book of Ben Sira." - Back cover
