This [book] shows that despite U.S. efforts ostensibly to promote human rights in El Salvador, conditions there remain deplorable. It also demonstrates that while the Bush administration continues the Reagan administration's policy of backing El Salvador's brutal military, the cold war rationale for supporting the Salvadoran government and armed forces is as weak now as at the dawn of U.S. military involvement. Documenting a wide range of violations by all sides in the conflict, Americas watch challenges the current administration's view that the human rights situation in El Salvador has steadily improved, and calls for a thorough reevaluation of the role of the United States in El Salvador. |
