Torn by the struggle between flesh and spirit, after an early life of incontinence, Saint Augustine became a convert to Christianity in his thirty-third year and was ordained a priest in 391. Consecrated Bishop of Hippo, his influence spread throughout the Christian world from his native Numidian Africa by means of sermons, letters, philosophical and theological essays, confessions, and his famous City of God, in all of which he reiterated the goodness and all-pervasiveness of God.
