YA James Bentley, Catholic priest and journalist, presents a fascinating portrayal of 365 personalities bonded together over the centuries by their devotion to Jesus Christ. The saints' lives are placed in historical context, with a capsulized sketch of their ordeals and martyrdom. Quotations from the saints are used throughout the book; this provides a powerful glimpse of their intellect. The format of this book is particularly appealing. Fine quality paper is used, and each page is lavishly illustrated in color with portraits of the saints chosen from Christian art spanning almost 2,000 years. It is unfortunate that there is no statement explaining the terms by which the saints were selected by the church and by the author. This book will be used primarily by YAs for research, but once discovered, the extraordinary lives within will capture their own audience. Anne Douglass, Houston Public Library
