For too long, clinicians have tried to understand and treat children's anxiety disorders with adult approaches. Through this distorting lens, often the youngsters' unique suffering and opportunities for therapeutic change have been missed. Clinical Handbook of Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents overcomes this failure. The book addresses the major clinical features of anxiety and anxiety-related disorders as they are specifically manifested in young people. Written by experienced clinicians concurrently involved in research, it combines the most up-to-date treatment methods based on sound, systematic studies. From separation anxiety to elective mutism to panic disorder, the authors explain the symptomatology and discuss issues of differential diagnosis and assessment. Therapist roles, as well as termination, relapse prevention, and obstacles to therapeutic success, also are usefully explored.
Finally, there are case illustrations with step-by-step protocols, including two cases for each anxiety syndrome to help clinicians treat both typical and difficult cases. Clinical Handbook of Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents is a long-overdue, welcome addition to the study and treatment of child psychopathology.
